Absurdistan

Absurdistan is de van reële namen (zoals Pakistan en Afghanistan) afgeleide aanduiding van een fictief land, dat van absurditeiten aan elkaar hangt. Men zegt Welkom in Absurdistan als men wil uitdrukken dat bepaalde verhoudingen scheef zijn, een vorm van sociale kritiek. Omdat men zich bij Absurdistan een staat voorstelt, ligt het voor de hand vooral kritiek op de overheidsbureaucratie aan het begrip te verbinden. Het is niet bekend door wie wanneer de term geïntroduceerd is. In de New York Times verschijnt het woord voor het eerst op 30 augustus 1990 in een artikel over Rusland: ‘Moskou als hoofdstad van Absurdistan.

Turning the Place Over consists of an 8 metres diameter ovoid cut from the façade of a building in Liverpool city centre and made to oscillate in three dimensions. The revolving façade rests on a specially designed giant rotator, usually used in the shipping and nuclear industries, and acts as a huge opening and closing ‘window’, offering recurrent glimpses of the interior during its constant cycle during daylight hours.

The construction programme started in February 2007 and involved the careful deconstruction of the façade across three floors of the building, which was then reconstructed and fixed to the enormous pivot installed at the heart of the building. This astonishing feat of engineering is stunning audiences on many levels. Disturbing and disorientating from a distance, from close-up passers-by have a thrilling experience as the building rotates above them.

Religie versus absurditeit (onbewust?)

 Omdat geloof iets heel persoonlijk is, zal men zelden zijn eigen geloof absurd vinden. En andere visies als absurd of fout gaan beschouwen.
Religie is voor mij persoonlijk een absurd gegeven, het heeft een grote impact op de mensheid. Door geloof is de kunst ontstaan, gigantische tempels en kerken werden gebouwd. Mensen leven volgens de regels van hun God… Concepten zoals ‘God schiep de wereld in 6dagen’, ‘het hiernamaals, hemel en hel’, ‘de zoon van God’, ‘Heilige koeien’, ‘een boerka dragen’… kunnen voor buitenstaanders absurd lijken.

Abraham’s faith allowed him to do something on Mt. Moriah with respect to the sacri­fice of Isaac which defied all reason, logic and moral sense. But Abraham, because of his faith in God above all, believed in that absurd instruction and was prepared to do it based solely on faith. Obviously, to any reasonable definition, this was blind faith since there were no available justifications in the sense-perception realm.

 

Kierkegaard vond religie, het Christendom absurd…

Christian dogma, according to Kierkegaard, embodies paradoxes which are offensive to reason. The central paradox is the assertion that the eternal, infinite, transcendent God simultaneously became incarnated as a temporal, finite, human being (Jesus). There are two possible attitudes we can adopt to this assertion, viz. we can have faith, or we can take offense.
What we cannot do, according to Kierkegaard, is believe by virtue of reason. If we choose faith we must suspend our reason in order to believe in something higher than reason. In fact we must believe by virtue of the absurd.
